As the webmaster was moving on, we were asked to maintain the current WordPress site and improve the SEO for some localised searches in the hope that that would increase organic lead generation within a few months.

The Start

Especially in SEO, the saying ‘short term gain is long term pain’ is something to be wary of. In this case however, the site was not new to us as we did recall it coming up nationally in industry related searches, when working on other sites within the same industry. The site had a strong foundation a Domain Authority of 25. After checking the local competition, we took on the challenge!

Some competing sites had a similar Domain Authority, others were 14 point ahead of us. Also as the local searches were related to major cities the search volume was relatively high and this also attracts competition sites that are very aggressively playing the game and risking their long term Google reputation. This happens more often and obviously does influence the performance of the site that we are working on as well.

Development

This project went through the following stages:

  1. Local keyword research

  2. Competitor analysis

  3. On-page content creation

  4. Catching up on the backlog in website maintenance

  5. Improving on page performance, ie. loading speed, internal links, etc.

  6. Creating external traffic by utilising external organic promotion and adjusting existing SEA campaigns (ie Google Ads and Bing advertising)
